2010 tapas tour: A very special customer, Andrew Zimmern

I will show you the most historic neighborhood, the Madrid of the Hapsburgs. We will eat at my four favorite bars where we will pair their specialties with award-winning wines from my cellar. Price of the tour is 65€, all food and wine is included, enough for dinner. The tour is in English and takes place in the evening.

The evening begins in a 19th-century tavern, sipping on the aperitif of the city, “vermut de grifo”We will pair the vermut with “Soldaditos de Pavía“, salted cod fritters in saffron batter, a traditional Madrid tapa.

Next, I’ll whisk you off to my favorite ham bar to taste Spain’s finest delicacy: “Jamón Ibérico de bellota“. We will pair the ham with Victoria 2, chosen the best Spanish white wine of 2014 by the Gourmets Wine Guide. The wine has intense melon aromas and flavors that compliment the ham to perfection.


It is now time to go deeper into Old Madrid through its narrow cobblestone streets and broad squares and make our way to a restaurant housed within an 18th-century mansion!
We will sit down to taste Presa Iberica, Spain’s favorite cut of Ibérico pork, which accounts for a mere five pounds of the pig’s weight, hence the price of forty dollars a pound.

Now is perfect time to start with the reds. Depending on group size I will open as many premium red wines from my collection as necessary. We will start with a heavy-weight, Rioja Viña Ardanza 2005.

For dessert, we will have 25-year-old Pedro Ximénez La Cañada, chosen many times, by the Gourmet Wine Guide, as the best sweet wine in Spain. If I could have only one wine, this would be it. We will also taste a young Pedro Ximenez wine to see what a difference 25 years of aging makes. We will also have two different desserts that pair in the most amazing way with these two wines.

The cost of 65 euros covers all food & wine as well as access to a Google map of my favorite bars and attractions.

Tour starts in the city center at 20:00 from Tuesday to Saturday, and at 12.30 pm on Sundays. Minimum age is 25 (exceptions can be made).  Groups are small, maximum of 10 (except on request).
